For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. As always, join in the conversation using #TheFemWord and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. #FemNews
1. This past Tuesday, badass Christine Hallquist made history as the first openly transgender person to become a major party nominee for governor. Hallquist, a resident of Vermont, is the former CEO of the Vermont Electric Cooperative and one of the many LGBTQ+ candidates running for office in this election cycle. Go, Christine, go!
2. When badass Chidera Eggerue (a.k.a. The Slumflower) posted the hashtag #SaggyBoobsMatter on an Instagram photo of her wearing a sundress with no bra, she didn’t expect it to ignite a global movement. Now the hashtag is a call to action for women with saggy breasts everywhere and a rallying cry in the conversation about absurd expectations of women and our bodies.
"Women are taught that our value and our ability to be loved is wrapped around how appealing, attractive, and desirable we are. That idea is so flawed. being worthy of love is nothing to do with what your body looks like. it's literally the least important thing.” - Chidera Eggerue
3. Kicking ass and taking names... The badasses of India’s first ever all-female SWAT team are breaking with tradition. Thirty-six women underwent fifteen months of extremely demanding training and will work alongside a commando team in Delhi.
“People often have this kind of misconception that women cannot do this or women cannot do that, but I can say very proudly that these women are on par and at times better than the male commandos.” - Pramod Kushwaha, Sr. Delhi Police Official
4. Physicist Dr. Jess Wade and chemist/beamline scientist Dr. Claire Murray are fed up with the dangerous stereotypes discouraging girls from pursuing their passions… so they started a crowdfunding campaign to gift a copy of Angela Saini’s book Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and the New Science That’s Rewriting the Story to every girls’ state school in the U.K. We’re also pleased to report the campaign was a massive success -- great job, badasses!
5. Crazy Rich Asians, which features a predominantly Asian cast, premiered in theaters this week and is taking the box office by storm. We’re so excited to see this amazing movie full of badass Asian women!
Finally, Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, passed away on August 16 at the age of 76. While we are saddened to lose her, Aretha's talent and joy will never be forgotten. Thank you, Aretha. <3
Have you watched the latest video from The Fem Word? We had the chance to interview badass Destiny James, a student at the University of Miami and the recipient of a $50,000 scholarship from Drake himself. Hear Destiny’s story in her own words...
