#FemNews Weekly Roundup Vol. 4

Updated: Nov 26, 2018

For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. As always, join in the conversation using #TheFemWord and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. #FemNews

1. Paint us like one of these #badass girls. These summer campers are taking girl power to the streets… literally. Armed with cans of spray paint, the fearless artists of San Francisco’s Graffiti Camp for Girls are expressing themselves and tackling the male-dominated world of (legal) graffiti. Rock on, girls!

2. Last week, actress Evangeline Lilly came out about a terrible experience on the set of the hit television series Lost that can only sound too familiar to women. After being “cornered” into filming a scene partially naked, Lilly felt “mortified” and stated she “would never take [her] clothes off on [the] show again.” While Lilly received an apology from the show’s (male) creators and producers, her experience says volumes about the treatment of women in media and Hollywood… and goes to show that even years later, we can still speak out.

3. This badass activist has made mandatory sexual consent education in New Zealand her mission. In an incredible open letter, seventeen-year-old Patricia Alcartado writes, “if consent education was made mandatory, students from a young age can be more informed of rape culture and how it can be dismantled in this country.” Go, Patricia!

4. Breaking news: Octavia Spencer will be playing Madam CJ Walker in an upcoming Netflix limited series. One of the few African American millionaires of the twentieth century, Madam CJ Walker started her own hair care business when the industry was not geared toward black women. This #badass went from washing clothes to legit mogul and we can’t wait to be re-inspired by her story.

5. Badass Indra K. Nooyi is stepping down from her position as chief executive of PepsiCo. As a female CEO, Nooyi was a shining beacon amongst the boys’ club that is corporate America. The lack of gender parity in c-suite positions in the United States is no secret -- apparently only one in five of the most senior executives at American companies is a woman. Nooyi’s leadership will be greatly missed, but we can’t wait to see all the up and coming badasses she has inspired light the corporate world on fire!
