#FemNews Weekly Roundup Vol. 3

For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. As always, join in the conversation using #TheFemWord and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. #FemNews

1. This week, we learned actress, pop superstar, dancer, and producer Jennifer Lopez has been named the winner of this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. And it gets better -- she is the first Latin artist to ever receive the award. Insert one million clapping hand emojis because, JLo… you badass… you’ve totally earned this!

Bask in her glory.

2. The trailer for Rainbow - The Film, Kesha’s Apple Music documentary, was released this week. The film, which uses psychedelic vignettes to tell its story, is intended to be an empowering glimpse of Kesha’s healing process following her long and arduous legal battle against her former producer for sexual and physical abuse.

“I hope this film inspires others to never give up even if you feel full of hurt or lost, because after the storm comes a rainbow.” - Kesha (via Billboard)

Rainbow - The Film comes out on August 10 -- one year after the debut of Kesha's most recent album Rainbow.

3. We knew there was a legit reason for our Lush obsession… We’re loving this piece by Angela Chen at The Verge about how skin care is encouraging women to explore science! These badass “cosmetic chemists” are shaking up the skincare industry (and keeping our skin looking gorg) with their passion and smarts.

4. So... we really, really, really wanna be at this incredible Spice Girls exhibition in London! Now through August 20th, SPICEUP will feature over 7,000 pieces of Spice Girls memorabilia, including those amazing outfits, the dolls everyone wanted, and the original Spice Bus (restored to its former glory). We're hopping on a plane across the pond now to relive the 90s girl power... say you'll be there?

5. In unfortunate news, nerd culture is still very, very toxic. The trailer for DC’s newest television series Titans aired last week at San Diego Comic Con, and there was immediate backlash on social media against actress Anna Diop. Diop received an onslaught of racist, colorist hate messages in reaction to her playing the role of Starfire, an orange-skinned alien princess. Diop has since disabled comments on her Instagram.

6. In related (and more uplifting) news, Star Wars fans came out in support of The Last Jedi star Kelly Marie Tran, who recently left social media following the backlash from trolls she received for playing Rose Tico in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Supporters in Rose Tico cosplay gathered outside of Comic Con at the #RallyForRose, which was organized by The Nerds of Color to strike back against the vitriol many women, are subjected to by online anons. #badass
