#FemNews Weekly Roundup Vol. 2

For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. As always, join in the conversation using #TheFemWord and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. #FemNews

1. Trans actress and activist Nicole Maines is making history as television's first transgender superhero! At San Diego Comic Con, it was announced that Nicole is joining the cast of the CW’s “Supergirl.”

2. This week, India scrapped its bogus 12% tax on menstrual products. The tax on feminine hygiene was lifted after a year of campaigning by badass Indian lawmaker Sushmita Dev.

Activists hope this change will result in more girls, many of whom are forced to stay home during their periods due to lack of access to menstrual products, getting to go to school.

3. “The guy said, ‘Girls don’t play rock and roll,’ and I said ‘Bull.’” The trailer is finally here for Bad Reputation, the forthcoming Joan Jett documentary. Joan Jett was a trailblazer for women in the boys’ club of rock and roll, and we can’t wait to watch her journey on the big screen in September.

4. A new oral medication called Orilissa is the first endometriosis-treating drug to hit the market in 10 years. Endometriosis is very common (about one in 10 people will be affected) and extremely painful. Orilissa treats pain related to endometriosis and helps people living with this devastating condition manage their symptoms.

Basically, it’s a game-changer… and it’s about damn time we started taking (and treating) women’s pain seriously! (And speaking of women's pain...)

5. Finally, our thoughts are with Demi Lovato and her loved ones following her hospitalization on Tuesday, July 24th. While we are still unsure what exactly happened, we do know “she is awake and with her family,” according to her publicist.

Demi, who recently celebrated her sixth year of sobriety, has been vocal about living with mental illness and her battle with substance abuse. Recovery is a process, and we are wishing this warrior all the best as she continues hers. Demi has and continues to inspire us all at The Fem Word. #badass
