For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. As always, join in the conversation using #TheFemWord and follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. #FemNews
1. Thursday, October 11, 2018, was International Day of the Girl! The Fem Word is deeply proud and humbled to be part of an international, intersectional community of badass women and girls. You astonish us every day with your intelligence, strength, and kindness. Your stories -- your experiences -- are why we do what we do: amplify to inspire. Keep on doing you, badasses. We love ya. xoxo
2. Need more inspiration on International Day of the Girl? Here are 11 incredible quotations from and about some seriously badass women that won’t fail to raise your spirits.
"Girl power in my mind is to let girls be exactly what they are. Let them be angry. Let them be resentful. And rebellious. Let them be hard and soft and loving and sad and silly. Let them be wrong. Let them be right. Let them be everything, because they are everything." - Amy Sherman-Palladino
3. For World Mental Health Day, Lady Gaga, founder of the Born This Way Foundation, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, co-authored a powerful piece in The Guardian on suicide, stigma, and fear. They share heartbreaking statistics and inspiring stories of ordinary people around the world working to build compassionate, respectful communities that prioritize mental health. Thank you Lady Gaga and Dr. Ghebreyesus. You are both badasses.
4. An arctic researcher ferociously battling climate change. An astronomer sharing her love of the stars and asking questions about our existence. A doctor-turned-entrepreneur advocating for women’s reproductive health and family planning by making birth control more accessible. These are only three of many badass women shattering the STEM glass ceiling.
5. U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced her resignation this week. During her 14 years of public service, Haley made strides for women in American politics as the first female governor of South Carolina, the nation’s second Indian-American governor, and one of Time magazine’s most influential people in 2016. Thank you for your service, Madam Ambassador.
6. Congratulations to Taylor Swift, who won big at this year’s American Music Awards and set a new record (23!!) as the most awarded female artist in AMAs history! But, of course, TSwift out-badassed herself by using her acceptance speech to tell her U.S. fans to go vote in November’s midterm elections. Afterwards, Vote.org reported an enormous spike in online voter registrations -- as many as 65,000.
