For all those badasses trying to catch up on the headlines, here are a few highlights from the past week. Sign up for our newsletter to receive #FemNews and other videos, articles, and updates from The Fem Word every Tuesday.
1. Higher. Further. Faster. At the London premiere event for Captain Marvel, the first female-led superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (after 21 films…), star Brie Larson shared a heartwarming moment with a young fan dressed up like her character, Carol Danvers. Nonprofit organization The Female Lead, which is “dedicated to making women’s stories more visible and offering alternative role models to those ever-present in popular culture,” orchestrated the photo session and Q&A between Larson, the CM cast, and eight-year-old Illy.
Also… we’re just gonna pop this here because we’re so excited… (Oh Captain... our Captain.)
2. The U.S. Women’s soccer team literally just got in formation. In time for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, all 23 players wore jerseys bearing the names of inspirational women, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, and Queen Bey herself. The jerseys debuted during the SheBelieves Cup tournament, a movement that “originated in 2015 in the lead up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup” and “was created with the goal [of] encouraging the female leaders of tomorrow to chase their dreams.”
3. “People are always telling me what I can’t do, and I love to prove them wrong.” We’re shook by 22-year-old American phenomenon Antoinette “Toni” Harris, who has become the first woman in a skill position to ever receive a college football scholarship. Harris, who plays safety, shot to national fame when she appeared in Toyota’s 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Super Bowl ad, and will be attending Central Methodist University in Missouri. Next stop… NFL.
4. Actress Julia Roberts is reportedly in talks with Amazon Studios to star in and executive produce a limited series adaptation of Jo Piazza’s 2018 novel “Charlotte Walsh Likes to Win.” The story follows a woman who leaves her high-powered Silicon Valley job to move back to her Pennsylvania hometown with her husband and daughters and enter the pivotal Senate midterm election. With her dual acting and producing roles, Roberts continues her badass journey representing women as a master both in front of and behind the camera!
5. Supporting women-owned businesses is about to become as easy as checking your smartphone. In celebration of Women’s History Month, review site Yelp has collaborated with Rebecca Minkoff to support women-owned businesses on its site with a new, permanent identification feature. Even more reason to schedule brunch with your besties this weekend…
