5 New Year's Resolutions Inspired by Badass Women in 2018

We're officially a full week into 2019... how's that resolution going? We're not saying you have to jump on the #newyearnewme bandwagon, but reflection and goal-setting, no matter how big or small, is always good in our book. So is setting realistic challenges for yourself that are totally doable and will make your life better!

If you need some inspo, are are five new year's resolutions inspired by takeaways from badass women we've featured on The Fem Word in 2018. Prepare to make 2019 your BEST year yet.

1. Get Serious with Your Side Hustle

While researching shops to highlight for Women-led Wednesday (yes -- it 's a holiday!), we were blown away by the stories behind the stores. Case in point: This Many Boyfriends Club's trio of creatives who abandoned their tumultuously chauvinistic 9-5 to start their own ceramics workspace, or the 18-year-old founder of posi-vibes-only, clean beauty franchise Zandra Beauty.

Their diverse success stories all start with a similar formula: take a chance and dive headfirst into your passions.

... and don't be scared to ask your friends and family for help! Yes, risk-taking can be scary, but the rewards can be SO worth it. Set mini goals for yourself every week and work towards bringing them to life one step at a time. You just might be hosting your own entrepreneurial TED Talk one day (hey, it worked for Zandra!)

2. Get Involved with a Cause You Believe In

When it comes to giving back, the holiday season tends to get all the hype, but there are communities in need no matter the season. Keep the momentum going and find a cause that truly resonates with you -- like TFW's own Kelley Poff, whose series on homelessness and women will continue into 2019! Kelley recently spotlighted badass photographer and activist Ayesha Khwaja, who is doing her part to help the 41 million people are at risk of hunger each year in America.

Every Sunday, Ayesha helps to feed about 100 people experiencing homelessness in Washington, D.C., and is a prime example that there's wayyyy more you can so than donating $$$$. Example: DM your organization of choice on Instagram to introduce yourself and your strengths. They might need help creating an email campaign or drafting a grant proposal. Bonus: you can add the partnership to your resume. A win for everyone!

3. Get Political ( * cough* Vote 'Em Out *cough* )

From #MeToo and Time's Up to the many women's marches around the world, 2018 saw an uproar of gloriously outraged and outspoken women. Now, especially in the wake of November's midterms, badass women keep on crushing records. Let's keep it up!

Find a march in your area and join the #WomensWave on January 19th to let 'em know in the White House what's really good with YOUR rights. Come election season, educate yourself on the candidates and their platforms so you can partake in informed dialogue, educate your community on issues affecting women locally and globally, and get to the polls!

4. Read More (For Real This Time)

Did you know London's Feminist Library has preserved works of badass feminist literature for over 40 years? This archive of women's empowerment features some pretty impressive texts, begging the question: when was the last time YOU were impressed by a book?

Shut that phone off an hour before bedtime and whip out a book instead. Try an an hour a day. If the average reader can complete a 300-page book in 10 hours, just think of all the books you could cover by 2020 (36.5 ! #math)!

5. Get Money Smart

Who else got quizzed on the periodic table of elements in school but never learned a thing about investing? We feel that. Luckily, there's nothing a badass can't teach herself! Make 2019 the year you master money management.

According to The Financial Diet: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Getting Good with Money, we should be treating our finances with the same respect we treat our bodies -- investing in and caring for our financial health now will ensure financial stability and freedom for our future selves.

Like the way that sounds? Hit the link above for nine tips to get you started on your journey to financial health! There's also apps like Mint that can help make money management easy, and Robin Hood (a.k.a. -- investing for beginners!). Girlboss's money channel also has great tips to transform yourself into a financially fierce female.
